It’s been a challenging six months for us all. Our heart goes out to everyone that has been affected by the virus or the resulting economic hardship.
Throughout the pandemic, the YMCA has continued to provide tens of thousands of meals, host blood drives, and assure the safest environment for those residing in our subsidized housing facility. With the advent of a new school year, the YMCA is operating virtual classrooms, serving school districts throughout the region, so parents know their children are in a safe environment and getting their schoolwork done.
Early this summer, the Harrisburg Area YMCA reopened all of its facilities, each offering their own set of programs with safety protocols in place. We’re so excited to be back open and welcoming folks once again through our doors. The Harrisburg Area YMCA has taken significant steps to assure the safety and health of its members, including adopting the policies set out by the CDC. We have also invested in the CDC-endorsed Clorox® Total 360® System at each branch, which offers the highest level of surface disinfection. We are also installing the most advanced air purification systems available in all of our branches. To learn more about the health measures taken by our association, please visit our website.
Camp Curtin YMCA
The Camp Curtin YMCA strives to serve the community in a variety of ways. Boys LEAD is a mentoring program for boys ages 8-12, providing them with social skills and activities that help grow their leadership potential. Girls AIM serves girls ages 8-12, building a positive self-image and confidence in work and leadership. Both programs take place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM and have gone VIRTUAL! East Shore YMCA
In addition to the School-Age Child Care programs held at our downtown location and various local schools, the East Shore YMCA will be offering a Virtual Learning Space with all-day care at the Friendship Center and the East Shore YMCA. What is a Virtual Learning Space? It’s a safe, distanced, and supervised space where your kids can complete their virtual learning for school. With a la carte options, parents can choose which days they bring their kids in order to coordinate with hybrid schooling programs. Learn more about this new initiative here.
Northern Dauphin County YMCA
Barb Koppenhaver, a 75-year old cancer survivor, has been attending the Northern Dauphin County YMCA for the past few years. Her experience began with LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, where she learned the fundamentals needed to better her health. Barb feels comfortable and safe attending the Y because of the steps we’ve taken to protect our members against the pandemic, including ongoing cleaning throughout the day and new cleaning systems integrated into our branch. Barb enjoys attending the Y on a regular basis with her buddy Shirley and her camaraderie with staff and other members. We’re so grateful for Barb for sticking with the Y!
West Shore YMCA
Blood donations are in high demand, especially during a global pandemic. The West Shore YMCA has been hosting blood drives throughout the COVID-19 crisis. In partnership with the Central PA Blood Bank, our staff and community have donated nearly 300 pints of blood, able to help hundreds of people in need! The Blood Drives look a little different this time, with appointment-only donations and walk-ins prohibited. If you’re interested in volunteering and donating blood at the next Blood Drive, follow us on Facebook so you can stay in the loop!
YMCA Center For Healthy Living
September is National Childhood Obesity Month. Did you know children who have obesity issues are more likely to have type 2 diabetes, heart issues, and sleep disorders? The Harrisburg Area YMCA Center for Healthy Living offers a four-month evidence-based program for children with obesity. The program empowers 7-13 year olds, with the support of their families, to explore proven methods of living a healthier lifestyle. A mother of a past participant noted, “…we are transforming not only our bodies, we are transforming our mindset and relationships with food.” Follow this link to check out the full testimonial! We are enrolling for the Fall Session now – for more information or to enroll, contact Corey Baughman at 717-232-2027 or by email at Corey.Baughman@ymcaharrisburg.org.
Stay tuned for next month’s goings-on at the Harrisburg Area YMCA!
