The Y’s child development programs provide a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and develop social skills. We believe it is never too early to focus on the development of the whole person and recognize the unique character and temperament of each child and support developmentally appropriate activities to foster emotional, intellectual and physical growth.

The Harrisburg Area YMCA offers Half Day Kindergarten, Preschool, School Age Child Care, and Full Day Care services for parents. We also offer Respite Child Care services for military families in special circumstances.

Keeping developmentally appropriate practices and collaborative communication with families in mind, we consider the individual child when our qualified, well trained staff members plan activities. The YMCA provides family activities and encourages participation when possible. Our child development programs are based on the four core values of the YMCA: caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Child Development Programs

Children enrolled in the toddler and preschool rooms are engaged in activities that are planned weekly. Rest assured that while your child may look like he/she plays at our child care program, they are learning many of the skills necessary for their future entrance into public school. Half Day Kindergarten and School Age groups build on the foundations of the school day, while providing an opportunity for children to play and grow. Our facilities are a child’s after-school and summertime dream, with pools, parks, gyms, and games to fill hours and days outside of school time.

Our qualified teaching staff will help your children develop in a positive environment that stresses safety, support, and care. Parent involvement in the program is important, as it will assist us in supporting and strengthening the family unit. The YMCA provides your children with exciting activities that encourage physical, mental, social, and spiritual growth.
