Community Service Programs
The YMCA strives to serve the community through our focus on social responsibility. Aligning with our mission committed to aid in the spiritual, mental, and physical growth of each person, the social service emphasis of the Harrisburg Area Y is designed to meet the pressing needs of our community.
Programs include affordable housing for homeless men in Harrisburg, free shower passes in collaboration with local churches, homeschool gym and swim programs, special memberships and financial aid to ensure that our services are available to all who wish to participate. These special needs programs and community service projects give back to the Harrisburg community each day. At the Y, we serve a membership of children, adults, families, and seniors from every socioeconomic background.
In an effort to promote hygiene and improve self-esteem, the Y opens its doors to those who may not have access to bathing facilities. Shower passes are available to anyone during low usage times for $3.00 at the East Shore and West Shore YMCA branches. We ask visitors to abide by a ½-hour time limit.
The East Shore Y collaborates with Market Square Church in Harrisburg which offers vouchers to those in need. The East Shore YMCA will honor shower passes Monday through Friday, from 8:00-10:30 AM.
The Y makes its showers available to the community during times of utility crises. This is when water or electric service may not be available to portions of the community. When feasible, the Y also opens its locker room facilities to visiting groups of volunteers.
Our YMCA seeks to serve our community in many ways. Our volunteers and staff members help accomplish this mission. Without their help, we would not be able to provide the number of service programs that we do today.
