Leading Healthy, Happy Lives Together

Vicki and Patrick began the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program at the same time, but they were strangers. The only bond they shared was a history of cancer and a desire to improve their lives through socialization and exercise. “I came to the YMCA because I heard great things about it,” said Patrick. “I was looking to get some exercise, and the program was very beneficial.”

As they progressed through the program, they started taking a variety of classes together, and soon a different kind of relationship blossomed. “We just started spending more and more time together, and truly connected,” said Vicki. “With our shared history, our bond developed quickly, and it’s been wonderful.”

Vicki and Patrick were shining examples of how the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program can bring people together, though a love connection is a unique twist. The LIVESTRONG® program is for cancer survivors at any stage of their survivorship and focuses on balance, physical fitness, and social engagement. “LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA helps each survivor to cope with their survivorship by finding a community of survivors to support them,” said Amy Jacobs. Amy is the Program Director in charge of the LIVESTRONG® program at the YMCA Center for Healthy Living, and she has a lot of personal connections to cancer survivorship.

“I was always active with the Penn State THON which supports childhood cancer research, and several members of my family have been affected by a cancer diagnosis,” said Amy. “The LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program is incredibly impactful for our participants, many of whom are not sure what their next steps should be post-treatment. It’s an honor to work with them to help them grow and thrive.”

As for Vicki and Patrick, they have continued to be a part of the YMCA ever since they met at LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA. “We come in several days a week and take Spinning® or use the Wellness Center. There are many options for us at the YMCA, and that has brought us together in our pursuit of a healthy life,” said Vicki.

“It’s been very beneficial to us,” said Patrick. “Without it, we may never have met, so it makes me feel very grateful to have the YMCA and Vicki.”
