Summer Camp – Y Summer Camp Registration

Y Summer Camp Registration

The Benefits of Summer Camp

Going to summer camp can have many benefits for your child. According to Our Kids, summer camp can allow kids to grow and have new experiences in a safe environment, which is especially important for sheltered or “bubbled” youth.

For example, summer camp can help kids gain lifelong friendships and allow them to learn even when school is not in session. Therefore, summer camp can be helpful in combating summer learning loss, which is a problem for many children as they lose what they have learned during the school year over summer break.

Furthermore, Our Kids states that there are seven major benefits of summer camp:

  1. Building friendships and social skills
  2. Developing resiliency and confidence
  3. Becoming and staying physically active
  4. Overcoming Nature-Deficit Disorder
  5. Learning the values of leadership
  6. Continuing education in the summer
  7. Carving time for active play

In conclusion, the Y’s summer camps can help with all of this, allowing your child to learn and stay active at the same time. Furthermore, there are many different experiences to be had at camp, including STEAM and Leadership education camps!

The Importance of STEM Education

The Camp Curtin YMCA offers STEAM camp and Youth Leadership Camp. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. This allows children to learn about STEM fields in addition to the Arts.

According to the Edvocate, the eight benefits of STEM education are:

  1. Fosters ingenuity and creativity

  3. Encourages experimentation
  4. Builds teamwork
  5. Creates knowledge application
  6. Encourages tech use
  7. Teaches problem-solving
  8. Encourages adaptation

In addition, according to Edutopia, an arts education can have many benefits.

  1. Growth mindset
  2. Self-confidence
  3. Improved cognition
  4. Communication
  5. Deepening cultural and self-understanding

The Importance of Youth Mentoring

Also, youth leadership is something that camp can offer. With this in mind, the Camp Curtin YMCA’s Youth Leadership camp can help your child gain better relationships and make better decisions in life. According to, mentoring can have many benefits for children.

  • Increased high school graduation rates
  • Lower high school dropout rates
  • Healthier relationships and lifestyle choices
  • Better attitude about school
  • Higher college enrollment rates and educational aspirations
  • Enhanced self-esteem and confidence
  • Improved behavior, both at home and at school
  • Stronger relationships with parents, teachers, and peers
  • Improved interpersonal skills
  • Decreased likelihood of drug and alcohol use

Furthermore, one of the most important aspects of camp is that it helps children stay active. According to the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, summer camp can promote physical activity in addition to helping children stay away from phone and computer screens over summer break. Therefore, summer camp is especially beneficial for combatting sedentariness in children, since a sedentary lifestyle can lead to obesity.
