2025 Women’s History Month – Strong Women Leaders within the Y Movement

As part of Women’s History Month, the Harrisburg Area YMCA is sharing stories of women leaders who uphold our Y mission and make a constant effort to strengthen our communities. Each of these women play a pivotal role in supporting the growth and and success of our branches, programs, and members.

Megan Maurer – Vice President of Administration

VP of Administration Megan Maurer

Megan’s love for the Y stems from helping others reach their goals and improve their quality of life. While working with the Y, she has helped develop health programs and improved relationships with community and clinical partners. One of her proudest accomplishments was when she and her team helped the Y successfully bill insurance for the Diabetes Prevention Program.

For the young women leaders who are currently working to support their community, Megan advises “being authentic and true to who you are.” She says, “good things take time, so celebrate the small wins.”

Rosie Turner – Vice President of Experience

VP of Experience Rosie Turner

Rosie joined the YMCA in 2012 as the first Director of Marketing and Communications in the Association’s history. Ten years later, she became the Executive Director of Experience, once again starting a new department from the ground up. Throughout her career, Rosie has worked with every department to weave the YMCA brand into the organization’s culture. Her greatest joy is collaborating with others to create meaningful customer experiences.

To the young women trying to become change makers in the community, Rosie says, “find people who aren’t threatened by your desire to grow.”

Grace Ballard – Vice President of Philanthropy

Senior VP of Philanthropy

Grace is well-traveled and well-versed in the ways of the Y. She began her career in grant writing with the YMCA of San Francisco. While working with the YMCA of San Francisco, Grace secured over $1.2 million in grants during her final fiscal year as a grant writer and was soon promoted to Director Of Financial Development. After her time in California, Grace’s career then took her to Hawaii where she served as the Director of Philanthropy for the YMCA of Honolulu and raised more than $1.33 million in unrestricted funds annually.

Amy Jacobs – YMCA Center for Healthy Living Executive Director

YCHL Executive Director Amy Jacobs

Amy joined the Harrisburg Area YMCA Center for Healthy Living in 2018. She oversees health intervention programs and travels with her team to provide health care and insure related resources to the people of Pennsylvania. One of her most groundbreaking accomplishments includes integrating statewide response efforts during the pandemic, which are still in place today.

Outside her work with the Y, Amy continues to serve Pennsylvania as a Certified Community Health Worker and sits on various committees and boards regarding the overall health and well-being of Pennsylvanians.

Tish Burns – Camp Curtin Site Director

Camp Curtin Site Director Tish Burns

Tish’s journey with the Y started in 2008 at the YMCA in Greater Pittsburgh. During her time with the Pittsburg Y, Tish became the Healthy Living Director, executed fitness initiatives, connected with community partners, and advocated for youth development. Her current goals for Camp Curtin include developing new programs for the youth, making holistic wellness a priority, and providing additional resources for community involvement.

Tish loves the YMCA organization for giving her the opportunity to be a community leader and create lasting friendships.

Sidney Gray – Northern Dauphin County YMCA Executive Director

NDCY Executive Director Sidney Gray

Sidney’s career at the Northern Dauphin County YMCA began with her training members and teaching fitness classes. Before transitioning to the NDCY Executive Director, Sidney also worked as the Senior Program Director and Aquatics and Wellness Director.

During her time with the NDCY, Sidney has had the opportunity to work with members, build community, direct events, and so much more. “I LOVE the YMCA for the work we get to do within our community. The Y truly has something to offer for everyone,” said Sidney.

To the younger women leaders trying to make an impact, Sidney suggests to “find your voice and own it. Your voice will help you find your people.”

Beth Peiffer – Former Chair and Current Board Member

Current Board Member Beth Peiffer

When Beth Peiffer was elected as the Harrisburg Area YMCA’s 58th Board Chair, she became the first female Board President for the association in its 162-year history. Not only has Beth been a long-time member of the Harrisburg Area YMCA Board, but she has also volunteered as a board member for many other established non-profit organizations. Currently, Beth is the owner and president of Ralph E. Jones, Inc.

Our association is grateful for the opportunity to work so closely with Beth because her dedication to giving back and commitment to painting a better community aligns well with our Y mission and vision.

While Women’s History Month wraps up, we want to express our appreciation for all the women leaders who continue to help uplift our communities as well as our organization. We value the skills, experience, and insight each of them bring to our association every day.
