October 2019 IMPACT!

Autumn is the perfect time to be a member of the Harrisburg Area YMCA. We recently kicked off our 2019 Fall Membership Drive; this year, we want our community to know how much stronger they make us.

Our community is your community; at the Y, you’ll find a community of friends who are working to better themselves, their families, and our neighborhoods. With our 20/20 FitFriends Program, everyone can recruit their friends to join and save on their membership! We want to encourage our community that working together is always possible. Thank you for being a part of our Harrisburg Area YMCA community. Stay community strong and finish 2019 with us!

Camp Curtin YMCA– October 2019 IMPACT!

In response to recent violent activity in the neighborhood, the Camp Curtin YMCA has invested in additional measures to keep its members, youth, families, staff, and the entire community that surrounds the Camp Curtin YMCA safe. We have added additional security cameras, enhanced lighting, as well as signage indicating 24-hour surveillance on facility grounds. We have enlisted the services of a Harrisburg City police officer and squad car for daily patrol. We are hoping to facilitate positive interactions with community members and law enforcement. As the Cornerstone in Uptown Harrisburg, we will always take the lead in creating a safe community.

– October 2019 IMPACT!East Shore YMCA

The UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg Half Marathon, sponsored by Donegal Insurance Group, was held on Sunday, September 9th. The event had 789 runners and featured a new course with the finish line on Front Street, just down the road from the East Shore YMCA. We could not have had better running weather! We would like to thank all of our participants, volunteers, local police, EMS, and others who were integral in making this event possible! Our 2019 Race Series is slowly coming to a close, with the recently-held Troeg’s Independent Brewing Hop Dash 5K on 10/5 and the Enders Harrisburg Marathon around the corner on 11/10!

Northern Dauphin County YMCA– October 2019 IMPACT!

The Northern Dauphin County YMCA collaborated with Believe in Blessings Thrift Shop in Elizabethville. They let us bring a few of our mentoring kids in to do some back-to-school shopping! Through our partnership with the Halifax Community Back to School Yard Sale, we were able to secure clothing and shoes for at least fifteen of our mentoring students. The Northern Dauphin County YMCA youth mentoring program is for students in grades 2-12 in local school districts. This program creates a safe climate for youth and teens to connect with one another and maximize their potential!

– October 2019 IMPACT!West Shore YMCA

The West Shore YMCA would like to thank the crew from UPMC Pinnacle! They helped us clean up around our Program Annex today for the United Way of the Capital Region Day of Caring. The Day of Caring is a one-day event set aside for volunteer opportunities at local non-profit agencies (like the West Shore YMCA!). United Way of the Capital Region solicits volunteers from local companies and projects from schools, parks, arts and cultural organizations, environmental groups, and health and human service agencies. Thank you, UPMC Pinnacle, for helping us beautify our branch!

YMCA Center for Healthy Living– October 2019 IMPACT!

On Monday, September 16th, the CDC activated Emergency Operations Center for Investigation of Lung Injury associated with e-cigarette product use or vaping. Vaping has become a hot topic in recent weeks and it’s time we take a stand. National Jewish Health has launched My Life, My Quit, a 100% free, confidential hotline for teens to call and text. They can also visit the website for an online chat option. Here, they will receive support from a quit coach in order to stop using tobacco products, especially electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. They will also become more educated on the harmful effects nicotine has on the body. The YMCA Center for Healthy Living will continue to work with other organizations to tackle this ongoing health problem in the community.

Stay tuned for next month’s goings-on at the Harrisburg Area YMCA!
