May 2021 IMPACT!

Summertime at the Y enables children and families in the Harrisburg area to make the most of their summers, even if they look a little different than usual. The Harrisburg Area YMCA offers a variety of summer programming for kids and families, including summer camp, swim lessons, child care, and more. We’re committed to the healthy development of children and teens through a broad range of programs that inspire, build, and teach.

With the COVID-19 pandemic slowly subsiding, the health and well-being of our members and community continue to be our top priority. With summer around the corner, teaching children how to be safe in the water is more important than ever! The YMCA prides itself on ensuring the safety and skill of children and adults in the water. We want to encourage a lifelong enjoyment of swimming and prevent drowning by offering swim lessons, Learn to Swim camps, water fitness classes, and more.

Camp Curtin YMCA– May 2021 IMPACT!

On April 3, 2021, the Camp Curtin YMCA hosted a COVID-19 vaccination clinic for eligible members of the community. The vaccination clinic was provided by Hershey Cares Pharmacy, in partnership with Shades of Greatness, the LeSean McCoy Foundation. This event was an overwhelming success, with close to 700 people vaccinated with their first dose! Everyone at the Camp Curtin YMCA was honored to be involved in such an important community event. This success led to a second vaccination event held on May 1, 2021, partnering with Shades of Greatness and Hershey Cares. Thank you to our partners, staff, and community for allowing us to help others.

– May 2021 IMPACT!East Shore YMCA

Thanks to the dedicated staff, volunteers, and community surrounding the East Shore YMCA, we were able to host several safe running events in 2020! Because of those successful events, we are able to continue our 2021 Race Series with your favorites, and peace of mind is the best part! On May 15 and 16, we kicked off our 2021 Series with a new race: the Select Physical Therapy Halfity-Half Weekend! Nearly 400 participants around the region joined us for a traditional half marathon and its quirky counterpart, the half-half! The weather cooperated and everyone had a great time.

Friendship YMCA– May 2021 IMPACT!

The Friendship YMCA is offering a new program called “Kids In Action,” a fun fitness class that develops fundamental movement skills that include strength, endurance, flexibility, and coordination. We offer classes for kids ages 7-9 and 10-12. Our goal is to offer fun and challenging activities that inspire kids to move and reinforce the value of staying active! This class also gives parents and families a chance to work out at the Y knowing their kids are having fun around the corner! Classes are held every Wednesday from 5:00-6:00 PM (7-9) and 6:15-7:15 PM (10-12).

West Shore YMCA– May 2021 IMPACT!

Since 1972, the West Shore YMCA Competitive Swimming Program has consistently served youth in the Central Pennsylvania area. When the YMCA and other fitness facilities were forced to shut down due to COVID-19, it was the first time the Competitive Swimming Program was “paused” since its inception. When we were finally able to reopen our program, it was great to see so many participants make their way back! In the face of COVID, we had increased sanitation protocol and added safety precautions, but it never dimmed anyone’s smile (even under the masks)! With other sites closed, we had to move all of our practices to the West Shore YMCA natatorium, offering livestreaming for parents to spectate from a safer distance. We’re proud of how our swimmers adapted and admire their vigilance. As one of our 12-year old participants remarked, “swim friends are the best.”
