This month, we presented our 166th Annual Meeting via Zoom. Held in a virtual format for the first time, many have remarked on how the Harrisburg Area YMCA responded and served the community throughout the pandemic.
We also kicked off our 2021 Annual Campaign, beginning a new year of sharing our story and expanding our mission across the mid-state. We invite you to revisit the meeting and enjoy video testimonials, highlights, and statistics from the Harrisburg Area YMCA in 2020. Thank you for supporting the YMCA; it is, and always will be, FOR ALL.
Camp Curtin YMCA
Harrisburg’s own Chris Franklin of the Harlem Globetrotters (popularly known as “Handles”) paid a visit to the Cornerstone Academy in February. He both entertained and inspired the students; Mr. Franklin showed the kids some basketball tricks and reminded them about the importance of a good education. He encouraged them to pursue their dreams, regardless of any obstacles. The students were excited to leave with souvenirs, autographed pictures, and some extra inspiration! All in all, Black History Month was a success at the Camp Curtin YMCA. The students learned a lot about African American heritage; this is definitely one for the books!
East Shore YMCA
The East Shore YMCA was grateful for the ability to vaccinate over 20 residents this month. Many of our residents are considering high-risk, and being able to keep them safe was a privilege. We would like to thank Rite Aid for coming by the East Shore YMCA and taking care of our YMCA residents, many of whom have underlying health risks. While vaccines are the next step in COVID-19 mitigation, the East Shore YMCA is continuing its commitment to cleanliness by regularly sanitizing exercise machines and high-touch surfaces and integrating new cleaning technology.
The Friendship YMCA was excited to host a Community Blood Drive with the Central PA Blood Bank on Friday, March 12th! We had 28 donors successfully give blood, totaling 24 units. 24 units of blood can help over 70 patients in need! It’s important now more than ever to give blood; with the pandemic, blood banks are in shorter supply. We’re happy to provide the space needed to hold these important events, and we can’t wait to see more of you again soon!
Northern Dauphin County YMCA
The Northern Dauphin County YMCA supported and collaborated with the Upper Dauphin Area High School on an awareness project. Their Step Up program combines two increasing needs: public art and giving back. Shoes were presented to the Northern Dauphin County YMCA by Gracie Gehring (artist) and Leah Kemper (author), students of UDA that completed their Step Up project on the word “selfless.” We’re excited to have this special work of art displayed at our branch!
West Shore YMCA
Like each of our YMCAs, the West Shore YMCA has seen a real uptick in members returning to the Y after having received their vaccine. With the recent installation of DBD Bipolar Ionization technology, the Y is able to assure the finest air quality that’s free of viruses and allergens. Coupled with CDC-endorsed Clorox® 360® sprayer systems, the West Shore YMCA is providing the most technologically advanced air and surface disinfection available.
YMCA Center for Healthy Living
March is National Nutrition Month! This year’s theme is Personalize Your Plate. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is inviting everyone to learn about making informed food choices. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to nutrition and health. We are all unique with different bodies, goals, backgrounds, and tastes! The YMCA Center for Healthy Living believes in making healthy eating habits that work for you. To learn more about National Nutrition Month, click here. To learn more about our Evidence-Based Health Intervention programs and how they encourage participants to reach their health goals, give us a call at (717) 232-2004 or visit our website!
