While our operations steadily move “back to normal,” we’re seeing new faces, welcoming back old ones, and continuing to hold strong in our mission. While summer may seem like a slow time for the Y, we’re seeing more hustle and bustle in our branches than we have since 2020! With summer camps in full swing, fall programs on deck, and members returning to use our facilities, we’re more excited than ever to see summer at the Y.
This summer also brings us leadership changes at two of our branches; Jamien Harvey, who has served the Association as the Executive Director of the Camp Curtin YMCA since 2021, has been appointed Executive Director of the East Shore YMCA. The current East Shore YMCA Executive Director Chad Krebs will be officially moving to the Executive Director position at our newly-opened Friendship YMCA. We’re pleased to have such excellent leadership and look forward to their future achievements.
Camp Curtin YMCA
Nine months ago, we never thought the Cornerstone Academy would look as it did when it came to an end on May 28, 2021. The program started out as an attempt to address a community need and blossomed into an integral part of the Camp Curtin YMCA. We had students from all over the city come to our facility to complete their virtual learning for a variety of reasons: working wifi, homework help, socialization, and more. With the support of our caring and kind staff, our students found a way to come together like they had known each other their whole lives! They collaborated on homework, puzzles, games, sports, art, and even community service projects, all while staying socially distanced and safe. We will take the lessons learned from this experience into our Summer Camp and our Cornerstone Early Learning Academy slated for Fall 2021. A BIG thank you to all of our Cornerstone families for making this school year one to remember!
East Shore YMCA
The East Shore YMCA and its child care staff and kiddos would like to thank Representative Patty Kim for stopping by our Summer Camp and donating books to our campers! During her visit, she emphasized the importance of reading, especially when “screen time” has become so habitual. Each camper got to take books home to share with their families. Thank you Rep. Kim for stopping by and helping our kids better understand how reading skills develop our minds!
National Flag Day took place on June 14th, and the tattered flag in front of the Friendship YMCA was less than impressive. Luckily, we have an amazing community, and Pam Neill noticed the flag and felt like helping us out by donating a brand new one! Pam is donating this flag in honor of her great-great-grandfather, Captain Samuel Chester Reid (1783-1861), who fought in a decisive battle in the War of 1812. Captain Reid also helped establish the most recent design of our American flag, recommending thirteen stripes for the original colonies and adding a new star for each state admitted to the Union. Thank you, Pam, for your extremely kind donation. We will display it with pride!
Northern Dauphin County YMCA
We got to wish our Pre-K kiddos “congratulations” on their graduations this year! Pre-K graduation was held on May 22, 2021, where 9 of the 11 graduating children came with their families. Between staff and families, we had about 65 people attend! Each graduate received a graduation diploma and a unique superlative certificate. The kids sang three prepared songs to their parents, and all enjoyed refreshments, graduation cake, and photo props!
West Shore YMCA
The Parkinson’s disease Foundation estimates that there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Rock Steady Boxing is the headquarters for a movement that is giving people hope by improving their quality of life through a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness curriculum. We’re excited to announce that Rock Steady Boxing is back at the West Shore YMCA! While our current session ends in June, we’re excited to continue this important program. Our coaches are YMCA personal trainers whose main focus is to address balance, strength, coordination, mobility, and flexibility.
YMCA Center for Healthy Living
The YMCA and Pennie™ are conducting a statewide Health Equity Tour in 2021! The Health Equity Tour is a series of in-person events throughout the 67 counties in Pennsylvania focused on access to health resources. The 12-month tour will promote the YMCA evidence-based health intervention programs. During the tour, our staff and community partners will distribute educational materials about COVID-19, oral health, tobacco use, and so much more! So far, the Health Equity Tour has been to all of the Southeast counties in the state and has reached over 900 people! We’ve been able to hold six vaccination clinics and prescreen over 50 women for the Pennsylvania Breast & Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (PA-BCCEDP).
