July 2021 IMPACT!

Another summer month packed away! As we quickly approach the 2021-2022 school year, the Harrisburg Area YMCA remains steadfast in providing quality child care to kids of all ages and backgrounds.

We’re continuing to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic and will always put children’s health and safety first. With this major transition back to in-classroom learning, our kids need us now more than ever! From infants to toddlers, to preschoolers and beyond, the Harrisburg Area YMCA is here to help.

Camp Curtin YMCA– July 2021 IMPACT!

Summer Camp is in full swing! Our STEM and Leadership Camps have been able to engage in educational learning, not to mention a ton of fun! STEM Camp kiddos K-5 are enjoying their weekly swimming trips, while participating in arts and crafts, scientific activities to learn about gravity and how plants grow, and indoor/outdoor games including kickball and basketball. Leadership youth grades 6-9 are getting educational experience and fun through their weekly golfing trips, swimming, basketball, and dodgeball; they even got to show off their skills at the Laser Dome! Leadership Camp students have explored topics such as the US government, leadership skills, and public speaking. Our kids still have so much to look forward to as we move through July!

– July 2021 IMPACT!East Shore YMCA

On Wednesday, July 21st, the East Shore YMCA held the First National Bank 40th Annual Harrisburg Mile! This year was filled with highly-anticipated normalcy, brimming with food trucks, games, drinks, and more. The race was held on Front Street in Downtown Harrisburg, continuing the tradition on Riverfront Park. This year’s race was a wonderful success; we saw over 1,000 participants, even more spectators, and beautiful weather! Thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success, including our Title Sponsor First National Bank, Series Sponsor Donegal Insurance Group, our vendors, volunteers, participants, and YOU, our Harrisburg community!

Friendship YMCA– July 2021 IMPACT!

Back in June, Lower Paxton Township was struck with a frightening situation, requiring an apartment complex to evacuate, leaving several families temporarily homeless for the day. The Friendship YMCA saw this need, and opened its doors for respite care with the Red Cross, offering showers and safe spaces until it was safe for residents to return to their homes. Fortunately, the situation was resolved before the need for folks to stay overnight, but we were prepared to shelter those in need. Despite a difficult situation, we’re feeling blessed to have been able to take care of our community.

Have you tried Personal Training at the Y? Our fan-favorite, Connor, is a brilliant trainer who has impacted the lives of several over the years. We asked one of his clients, Mason, about his experience working with Connor.

Q: How has training with Connor positively impacted your life?
A: Before training with Connor, I was insecure and lacked motivation. He has completely changed my life and helped me find a passion in lifting and fitness. He has also taught me many life lessons that will stick with me for the rest of my life. I really owe him for all he’s done.

Thank you to Connor for being so impressive and impactful. He’s a key figure at the Northern Dauphin County YMCA and we hope he continues to change lives through personal training!

West Shore YMCA– July 2021 IMPACT!

Who doesn’t love a love story? This one is special to our West Shore YMCA team. Meet Codie and Eve Allen! They met at the West Shore YMCA years ago as camp staff. Fast forward to July 17th – they got married! Eve has been with the YMCA since 2016 as a Camp Counselor and Camp Director; Codie has been with the YMCA since 2014 as a Camp Counselor, Camp Director, and Office Assistant. Both are college graduates and work as elementary school teachers. We are so excited for them and wish them nothing but happiness! CONGRATULATIONS!

The Harrisburg Area YMCA Center for Healthy Living has been partnering with Pennie on our Health Equity Tour! Pennie connects Pennsylvania residents with health coverage and can help link them to the additional financial assistance from the American Rescue Plan to lower monthly payments and/or out-of-pocket expenses. Purchasing health insurance shouldn’t be complicated – Pennie explains the facts and helps you understand your options. For more information, visit Pennie’s website or give them a call at 1-844-844-8040. You can also come to see us and Pennie in person at one of our next tour stops!
