The Harrisburg Area YMCA would like to wish health and posterity to you and yours this new year! We’re excited to launch into 2020 with programs and services to help our ever-growing community.
We are looking forward to expanding our mission and programs to those in need, including low to no-cost programs through the YMCA Center For Healthy Living. The YMCA Weight Loss program is the latest addition to a series of chronic disease prevention programs; it is designed to help people seeking a healthier weight by making small changes to daily behaviors and forming sustainable, healthy habits.
Camp Curtin YMCA
The Camp Curtin YMCA is changing the shape of Harrisburg! The Camp Curtin YMCA team spent 2019 speaking with city officials, local improvement groups, and businesses to gain support and funding for the Cornerstone in Uptown Harrisburg Initiative. Cornerstone in Uptown Harrisburg is a community improvement project undertaken by the Camp Curtin YMCA. This initiative will build single-family owner units on blighted properties in uptown Harrisburg with the intent that sustainable and affordable housing programs will attract new tenants, families, and first-time owners.
East Shore YMCA
Each weekday, the East Shore YMCA opens their doors to homeless men and women with our Shower Pass program. Working in conjunction with local churches, men and women in the our community are able to get free shower passes that allow them to use the shower facilities in the East Shore YMCA. We are proud to partner with local community organizations to help serve those in need in Harrisburg!
Northern Dauphin County YMCA
The Northern Dauphin County YMCA recently partnered with Dress For Success of South Central PA for its clothing drive! We received a remarkable amount of clothing, all to be donated to those less fortunate as they go through job interview processes and rejoin the professional workforce. Dress for Success is an international not-for-profit organization that empowers men and women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help them thrive in work and life.
West Shore YMCA
“Covered in Kindness” is a winter weather clothing drive that the Kids in Motion class at the West Shore YMCA has been doing for the past three years. During the month of December, the kids and staff bring in donations of lightly-used and new winter clothing items. These items are then donated to the local Bethesda Mission in hopes that these donations will then be used to help others in our community. This year we had a great turn out of items; we had over four bins full of donated items. It’s always heartwarming to see the kids come in with bags of items and how excited they are to donate them! Giving back and helping others is something that we love to talk about in our Kids in Motion program. We plan to continue our “Covered in Kindness” drive for years to follow!
YMCA Center For Healthy Living
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being. Research by the National Institutes of Health has been shown that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58%, and 71% in adults over the age of 60. If you would like more information or would like to sign up for a future class, contact Megan Maurer at 717-232-2004 or Megan.Maurer@ymcaharrisburg.org. New classes are starting at the end of January at select locations!
Stay tuned for next month’s goings-on at the Harrisburg Area YMCA!
