Healthy Eating Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are a great time for gathering with friends and family over food and drinks. With just a little preparation, you can enjoy celebratory foods mindfully and still experience all that the season has to offer!

If you are a guest at a dinner party or a different yuletide gathering, consider these tips to keep your night healthy, happy, and safe:

  • Try starting your day with a small meal that includes whole grains, fruit, vegetables, and some type of lean protein (poultry, fish, eggs, beans, Greek yogurt). Starting off strong sets a good pace for the rest of the day!
  • Consider eating smaller portions to allow yourself to check in with your hunger cues before and during meals and snacks. Eating mindfully can help us engage all of our senses while enjoying our food.
  • Socialize and settle into the festivities before seeking out food.
  • Savor foods you truly enjoy and pass up on foods that don’t entirely interest you. After all, pecan pie comes once per year, but chips and snacks are available anytime!
  • Move your socializing away from the buffet table or appetizer trays. You’d be shocked how much this can minimize unconscious nibbling!

When it comes to alcohol, satisfy your thirst by always drinking water first. If you are of legal age and choose to drink, moderate alcohol consumption is defined as up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks for men.

Sampling your favorite holiday treats perfectly pairs with being active! Cold weather doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to all outdoor activities. There are many ways to enjoy the weather by taking your physical activity outdoors. If you and the cold don’t quite see eye-to-eye, your Harrisburg Area YMCA membership comes with FREE access to our virtual wellness platform, YWellness 24/7! This service is a perfect way to stay active without harshing your vibe with the outside air.

Either way, if you get outside this winter, try these fun activities the kids will love as well:

  • Have a snowball fight
  • Go ice skating
  • Go sledding
  • Make snow angels

Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. One healthy choice can domino into another! If you don’t currently have a workout routine, there is no time like the present to get started.
