The Harrisburg Area YMCA Kicks Off 2014 Annual Campaign

1webeditHeaded by Campaign Co-chairman Hugh Simpson, the Harrisburg Area YMCA kicked off its Annual Campaign on February 27, 2014 at 5:30PM. The goal of the Annual Campaign is to strengthen the local community by delivering programs with a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The programs and services funded by the Annual Campaign benefit children and families in many ways such as after school care, summer day camp, swim lessons, youth sports, mentoring, and many other community building activities. Scholarships for memberships are also available for individuals or families who apply and qualify.

The kickoff program featured guest speakers Vanessa and Dave Bohner whose three special-needs children participate in swim lessons at the East Shore YMCA. “We came here this evening because we had to tell you what a difference the Y has made in our lives. We had several setbacks financially, and when we called to cancel our swim lessons, we were given a scholarship. It has made an incredible difference for our family, and we cannot be more grateful to you for what you do.”

President and CEO Richard Curl spoke saying; “It is thanks to all of you and your work that we are able to provide important services to our Harrisburg community. The Y is more than a gym. It’s a cause. As a charity, we’re dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the community’s health and well-being, and giving back and providing support to our neighbors.” Read Vanessa’s full story HERE.

It is the goal of the Annual Campaign that no one is turned away from a YMCA program or YMCA membership because of an inability to pay.

In 2013, more than $1.4 million was awarded in scholarships and program subsidies. The goal of the Annual Campaign this year is $656,000. The Harrisburg Area YMCA kicked off at 24 percent of goal. The campaign runs through early June.
