Encouraging kids to go outside and play is becoming harder than ever! In this age of technology, the Harrisburg Area YMCA provides youth sports programs that get kids moving and thriving. Youth sports have the power to combat a variety of youth issues, including negative self-image and increased sedentary lifestyles. Youth sports also promote the ability to work as a team, develop wholesome relationships, and more.
The Northern Dauphin County YMCA is soon kicking off its second year of NFL Flag Football, an awesome way for kids to get involved in the exciting world youth sports! The West Shore YMCA is also beginning its spring Developmental Volleyball season, where youth will practice an array of drills and play games.
As spring comes along, we welcome kids in our community to come to our facilities to reap the awesome benefits of playing youth sports.
Camp Curtin YMCA
The Camp Curtin YMCA’s Y Achievers and Teen Achievers kicked off Black History Month on Saturday, February 1st, by painting a mural in the Art Room. The mural (pictured) depicts Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the quote from his famous “I have a dream…” speech. At the Camp Curtin YMCA, we remember the gift of Dr. King’s legacy and are intentional in making his dream a reality. As we learn to learn together, grow together, and live together, we emphasize the importance of diversity in our community.
East Shore YMCA
It’s here! The Harrisburg YMCA Race Series launched its 2020 season earlier this month. This year welcomes familiar faces, new friends, and a community devoted to running! Each time you run one of our races, you strengthen your community. Our race series directly benefits several programs at the East Shore YMCA, including child care programs, chronic disease prevention programs, mentoring programs, and more. Discover your love of running, support the Y, and make great friends along the way!
Northern Dauphin County YMCA
The Northern Dauphin County YMCA would like to recognize our Members of the Month, Bill and Paige Heck! Bill Heck is an assistant swim team coach volunteer whose daughter, Paige, swims for the Northern Dauphin County YMCA. “YMCA swimming is in my blood, so I’ve appreciated the opportunity to help coach this team. It’s a fun group to work with, and I enjoy helping the swimmers improve their skills,” Bill says. Paige comments, “YMCA swimming has had a positive impact on my growth as a swimmer and joining the NDCY Swim Team has helped me achieve my swimming goals.” Thank you, Bill and Paige, for supporting the Northern Dauphin County YMCA!
West Shore YMCA
The West Shore YMCA has provided the use of its pool in collaboration with the Special Olympics since 2001. It began simply as swim lessons and has developed into a swim team! There are currently 45 participants and 15 volunteers. Many of the Special Olympic volunteers are YMCA staff and members. We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with an organization strengthening the spirit, minds, and bodies of their athletes!
YMCA Center for Healthy Living
February is American Heart Month, and as a leading community-based organization committed to improving the nation’s health, the Harrisburg Area YMCA urges everyone in our community to get a blood pressure screening. While high blood pressure and heart disease are serious conditions, the good news is that a healthy heart is an achievable goal through lifestyle changes such as lowering sodium, eating healthier, and getting more exercise! Getting help can be as easy as taking part in our Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program. For more information, contact Amy Jacobs at Amy.Jacobs@ymcaharrisburg.org.
Stay tuned for next month’s goings-on at the Harrisburg Area YMCA!
