Diabetes Alert Day 2019

While March 26 marks Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (we’re not kidding), we promise we didn’t make this one up: Diabetes Alert Day. Much more pressing than the former, Diabetes Alert Day is observed annually on the fourth Tuesday in March. This day works as a “wake-up call” that centers on the gravity of diabetes. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the risks and prevention methods. Even more importantly, it brings attention to risks associated with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes. The ADA estimates that 84 million Americans have prediabetes. 90% of them don’t know they have it.

Are you or someone you love at risk for type 2 diabetes? In true Diabetes Alert Day fashion, we strongly recommend taking a simple Diabetes Risk Test to see where you stand. It’s very possible that you may be at risk for this disease or may already have it. The risk test is distinct because it uses only health info that you would easily know about themselves. While the results aren’t concrete, it’s easy to take without needing a blood test.

The Harrisburg Area YMCA’s Center for Healthy Living works to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes by providing the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program within our communities. We offer YDPP at low to no cost to participants. In YDPP, a trained lifestyle coach will introduce topics in a supportive, small-group environment. Coaches will encourage as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity, behavior changes, and weight loss can help you reduce your risk of developing diabetes. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program uses a CDC-approved curriculum and is part of the CDC-led National Diabetes Prevention Program.

Contact Megan Maurer, Senior Program Director at the Harrisburg Area YMCA’s Center for Healthy Living, to see if this is a covered benefit of your insurance and a good option for you.
