Mickayla Frey has been chosen by Central Penn Business to receive the “Celebrate A Great Kid Award.” Mickayla received this award on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 at the Northern Dauphin County YMCA. She was interviewed by ABC27 and by Central Penn Parent Magazine for winning the award.
Mickayla Frey has been a true impact story for the Northern Dauphin County YMCA. Over the past year, many Y staff worked with Mickayla who is a partiicpant in the Y’s mentoring program. The staff have seen a significant amount of growth and maturity in her over a short period of time. Mickayla just turned 18 years old last month and she is a Life Skill student at Upper Dauphin Area High School. Mickayla has participated in many different activities at the NDCY including the Summer Camp Program, Before and After School Volunteer Counselor and as Volunteer Babysitter. Mickayla has also been recognized as the Northern Dauphin County YMCA’s Youth Volunteer of the Year. Mickayla was recognized for her volunteer efforts at the Harrisburg Area YMCA’s Annual Luncheon.
Mickayla loves to work closely with the children in the YMCA programs. She enjoys reading to the children, playing board games and pushing them outside on the swings. The children in our program and at the Upper Dauphin School look up to Mickayla because she has the motivation to do well in school even though it can be a struggle for her.
Mickayla struggles with applying physical activity in her daily routine. To prove to herself that she can do anything she puts her mind to, she signed up for a running event and a throwing event in the schools Special Olympics field day. She placed in the top 3 of all of her events. Mickayla exhibited to the other Life Skills students that if you work hard for something, you can accomplish anything. Mickayla was so proud of herself for receiving ribbons. She continues to work at healthier eating habits and daily exercise.
Mickayla’s smile can warm up a room and can put a smile on anyone’s face. Mickayla loves to give hugs and just loves being around people, especially those that Mickayla volunteers her time with each week.
