August 2021 IMPACT!

September is almost here and with it a new school year! All of us at the Harrisburg Area YMCA hope you had a safe and healthy summer. During this time of year, our association is well underway transitioning to fall classes, programs, school age child care, and welcoming our returning members.

Throughout the 2021-2022 school year, youth in our community will be in need of mentoring and life skills. At the Harrisburg Area YMCA, we provide programs that offer a safe and interactive environment where youth and teens can interact with positive role models. We’re excited to be starting a new school year where youth throughout our community can have access to these important programs.

Camp Curtin YMCA– August 2021 IMPACT!

Students at the Camp Curtin YMCA Leadership Camp learned a lot during their camp season! Youth discussed how to be a confident leader within the community and explored tips on job searching and professionalism. Students also got a glimpse into the future with their visit to Harrisburg University; our participants had the opportunity to speak with professors at the university, explore their programs, and got to learn about 3D printing, environmental preservation, and environmental technology. Thank you, Harrisburg University, for helping us expand young minds!

We said goodbye to all of our Pre-K friends who will be going off to Kindergarten and first grade in the fall! While our Pre-K program is academic, our kids sure had fun this year, learning 50 sight words and how to count by 5s and 10s to 100! We improved on our writing, cutting, and coloring skills. We also had fun going to Shanks Park, ZooAmerica, and bowling! Many walks were taken around the city and at City Island. Even better, our Pre-K kids were the photo winners for Shake It Up HBG on August 20th, with a variety of clever photo ops! Good luck to our kids as they leap to their next endeavor!

Friendship YMCA– August 2021 IMPACT!

The Friendship YMCA played host to a very special event: the first-ever Summer Family Fun Fair by Bike A Better Path! Bike A Better Path is a non-profit that collects donations in the form of brand new bikes and matches them with kids in need during the holiday season. Members of the community enjoyed food trucks, game booths, a dunk tank (a crowd favorite), music, wares, and more! The Lower Paxton Police Department also demonstrated to kids how to ride bikes safely. It was a successful summer day, and we’d like to thank all of the vendors and volunteers who made it possible!

We’re back with more Personal Training tales with Connor! We asked another client about their experience working with Connor:

Q: What do you enjoy about training with Connor?
A: His encouragement through everything and the way he thoroughly explains muscle movements to me.

Q: What do you feel you have learned most from training with Connor?
A: I have learned how to engage my muscles to do what I want them to do and why my body can or cannot do certain movements based on my muscle strengths or weaknesses.

West Shore YMCA– August 2021 IMPACT!

Our summer camp kiddos enjoyed a variety of field trips this summer, but I think we can all agree that making our pizzas and ice cream sundaes at the Radisson is by far the favorite! We’d like to thank the chefs and banquet team at the Radisson for making this a fancy and memorable experience for all of our campers and staff. Our students enjoyed flexing their creative muscles in the culinary arts. Also, say hi to Mr. Payton in the picture; it’s his first summer working with us, but he was a camper himself many moons ago!

– August 2021 IMPACT!YMCA Center for Healthy Living

The Harrisburg Area YMCA Center For Healthy Living continues to provide evidence-based health intervention programs virtually to serve our community. The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long lifestyle change program meant to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. “I am truly grateful for this program. It has helped me in so many ways. I have become more conscious of the things I eat and how they affect my body and health. I have learned most importantly that it’s the small changes that will last a lifetime. I am losing weight for the first time in my life and enjoying the life-changing process.” – Tracey, DPP participant
