August 2019 IMPACT!

September has arrived and with it a new school year! All of us at the Harrisburg Area YMCA hope you had a wonderful summer enjoying every bit of warm sunshine. During this time of year, our association is well underway transitioning to fall classes, programs, and school-age childcare.

Throughout the 2019-2020 school year, youth in our community will be in need of mentoring and life skills. At the Harrisburg Area YMCA, we provide programs that offer a safe and interactive environment where youth and teens can interact with positive role models. Our association has built these programs to keep kids engaged in activities that can set them on the right path. We’re excited to be starting a new school year where youth throughout the region can have access to these important programs.

Camp Curtin YMCA– August 2019 IMPACT!

The Camp Curtin YMCA would like to thank Brian Hudson and our friends at Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency (PHFA)! PHFA has awarded the Camp Curtin YMCA $300,000 from their PHARE fund in support of our Cornerstone Initiative and we couldn’t be more grateful. “We are so excited to kick off this initiative with such great partners in our community,” said Jamien Harvey, Executive Director of the Camp Curtin YMCA. “We are very grateful that our peers in the community are ready to go on this journey with us. It’s a thrill for us to welcome everyone to our newest community improvement effort in Harrisburg.”

– August 2019 IMPACT!East Shore YMCA

Water safety is a high priority at the East Shore YMCA! Our preschool swim lessons help young children understand the water and acquire the confidence they need to stay safe. The confidence they build stems from their newfound abilities in the pool and positive interactions with their peers! The East Shore YMCA has swim lessons available for most ages and skillsets; our Fall 2019 session begins on September 5th! Sign up your child today so that they can understand water safety (and water fun!).

Northern Dauphin County YMCA– August 2019 IMPACT!

Nothing goes with Yoga like a litter of puppies! The Northern Dauphin County YMCA held its second round of Puppy Yoga on August 10, 2019, in conjunction with Molly’s Place Rescue. With two time slots this year, we had an awesome turnout and raised over $480.00 for the 2019 Annual Campaign! Participants also brought an assortment of pet items that were donated to Molly’s Place Rescue. We would like to thank all of our participants, donors, staff, and Molly’s Place Rescue for giving us the opportunity to have a fun Saturday afternoon!

The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation estimates there are more than 1 million people in the United States diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Rock Steady Boxing is a non-contact, boxing-inspired fitness training that improves the quality of life for people battling Parkinson’s disease. This program is currently available at the West Shore YMCA and has two times: Mondays & Thursdays from 1:30-3:00 pm and 3:00-4:30 pm. Our main focus is on balance, strength, coordination, mobility, and flexibility. So far, the program has been an incredible resource for those in our community with Parkinson’s disease.
