– A HEALTHY LIVING INITIATIVE

A HEALTHY LIVING INITIATIVE

YMCA Summer Camp

It is always exciting to be able to announce a major new initiative and I am pleased to have the opportunity to share with you some very exciting news.

On July 1st, the Harrisburg Area YMCA launched its Healthy Living and Chronic Disease Prevention Initiative. Initially, the YMCA will be working closely with the PA State Department of Health to expand LIVESTRONG at the YMCA in Central PA and throughout the state. Coupled with the recent announcement by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the Harrisburg Area YMCA is gearing up for a significantly expanding role in serving those that have been clinically diagnosed as pre-diabetic. Next, we hope to expand programs and services to those who have been diagnosed with arthritis.

To lead this endeavor, Susan Jacobs has taken a sabbatical from leading our Northern Dauphin County Branch YMCA to head this exciting new initiative. As our new Executive Director for Healthy Living, Susan will be working directly with the PA State Department of Health, the Pennsylvania State Cancer Coalition and others to implement a variety of healthy living and chronic disease prevention initiatives in Central PA and throughout Pennsylvania.

Please join me in recognizing and congratulating Susan for the tremendous work she has done over the last 20 years as the Branch Executive of our Northern Dauphin County YMCA. Today, our beautiful Northern Dauphin County Y is serving more people and operating from its strongest position in its history, thanks to Susan, her outstanding staff team and her dedicated NDCY Board of Managers.

I also wish to acknowledge Susan and her team’s diligent work with many state, county and local agencies, which has been instrumental in establishing the foundation from which the Harrisburg Area YMCA can launch this major Healthy Living and Chronic Disease initiative. Under Susan’s leadership, the Harrisburg Area YMCA is excited to be expanding its healthy living and chronic disease prevention work, increasing our collaborative relationships, and ultimately reaching thousands of people that will benefit from our expanding capabilities.

I am also pleased to announce that NDCY Senior Program Director, Chelstan Anderson, effective July 1st, was appointed the Acting Branch Executive of our Northern Dauphin County Branch YMCA and will continue in this capacity during Susan’s sabbatical. Our best wishes go out to Chelstan, and the entire NDCY staff and volunteer team for much continued success!

Sincerely,
Rich Curl
President & CEO

Editor’s Note: The Harrisburg Area YMCA has an extensive history of leading tobacco cessation programs, nutrition classes, and many other healthy lifestyle services. Two years ago, the YMCA expanded its healthy living initiatives by offering the CDC National Diabetes Prevention Program and dramatically expanded the scope of its tobacco cessation program. And most recently, initiated its LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program to serve cancer survivors. As our organization’s efforts to address healthy living and chronic disease issues have grown, so have our developing partnerships with other organizations including the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and various health serving organizations.
