Our YMCA would never be able to impact the community without the help of our YMCA volunteers. Each day, hundreds of community members give of their time to support the YMCA mission in their community. Thank you to all of our volunteers! We couldn’t do it without you!

Association Office: Hugh Simpson

Hugh has been a guiding presence on the Harrisburg Area YMCA board, bringing wisdom and direction to critical decisions. His contributions shine through his involvement on the Strategic Planning and Financial Development Committees, where his insights shape the YMCA’s goals and impact. Known for his patience, tact, and determination, Hugh handles complex issues with care, fostering respectful, solution-focused discussions. Beyond the boardroom, he serves as an enthusiastic YMCA ambassador, sharing the Y’s mission and garnering community support. His dedication to spreading the YMCA story is a testament to his belief in its transformative potential. Hugh exemplifies volunteerism with unwavering commitment, embodying the spirit of service that drives the YMCA’s mission forward. We are immensely grateful to recognize him as the Area Office Volunteer of the Year.

Camp Curtin Branch: Dr. Sabina Grant-Spencer

Dr. Grant-Spencer joined the Camp Curtin YMCA Board in March 2024, quickly making a meaningful impact. Her efforts to secure funding, including letters for EITC support, have bolstered the YMCA’s youth programs. She’s actively building community partnerships, advocating for the YMCA with local leaders to enhance services. An advocate for education and youth development, Dr. Grant-Spencer’s commitment to underserved communities is evident in her strategic initiatives. Her expertise and compassion benefit both the YMCA and the wider Harrisburg community, and her dedication to youth success and YMCA values enriches Camp Curtin’s offerings for local families. We are grateful for her unwavering support and advocacy.

East Shore Branch: Shawn Geesaman

Shawn is an invaluable volunteer for the East Shore YMCA’s Race Series, known for his tireless dedication and proactive approach on race days. He arrives early to set up, stays to assist throughout, and often starts teardown, easing the workload for staff and the race director. As a leader, Shawn makes key race-day decisions with clarity and communicates effectively, ensuring smooth operations. He fosters a collaborative, positive environment, treating everyone with respect and reinforcing YMCA values. His impact extends beyond race-day support; he assists participants and volunteers, ensuring a seamless experience. Shawn’s advocacy for the YMCA further strengthens the community’s connection to its mission. His care, responsibility, and enthusiasm make him an irreplaceable part of the Race Series team.

Friendship Branch: Dan Langan

Dan brings dedicated leadership to the Friendship YMCA Board, advocating strongly for the YMCA’s mission and growth. Since joining over a year ago, he’s been a vital part of discussions on the East Shore YMCA’s future and a key supporter of the Annual Campaign. His role as AT&T’s Director of Public Affairs aligns with his YMCA contributions, enhancing the YMCA’s community reach. As incoming Board Chair, Dan plans to broaden his impact, exploring programming opportunities with AT&T to further support the Y. Dan’s commitment and advocacy have strengthened the YMCA’s goals, and his upcoming role promises to build on this foundation.

Northern Dauphin County Branch: Brian Zhu

Brian’s volunteer mentoring at Northern Dauphin County YMCA reflects his commitment to youth and community. Since September 2023, he’s mentored children ages 5-17, offering support and encouragement to help them overcome challenges. Brian empowers youth, promoting confidence and growth in alignment with the YMCA’s mission. His leadership fosters a safe, respectful space where honesty and accountability are central. Through his mentorship, Brian impacts the YMCA and the broader community, helping youth make positive choices and avoid risky behaviors. He encourages creativity, building critical thinking and collaboration among his mentees. Brian’s advocacy for equitable policies and his dedication to personal development underscore his exceptional commitment to youth empowerment.

West Shore Branch: Sherry Schube

Sherry has brought warmth and reliability to the Child Watch classroom at the West Shore YMCA since fall 2023. Volunteering three hours every Thursday morning, Sherry cares deeply for the children, engaging them in play and ensuring their safety. Her selfless dedication extends beyond the YMCA; she volunteers to earn a membership for her son, who recently faced personal hardships. Sherry embodies YMCA values through her kindness, respect, and integrity, fostering a positive atmosphere. Her presence offers peace of mind to parents, who trust their children are in safe hands. Sherry’s nurturing approach benefits both the YMCA and the wider community, making her a cherished volunteer.

YMCA Center for Healthy Living: Arletta Shenfield

Arletta passionately volunteers with the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA program, going above and beyond as a former participant. Her dedication includes meeting participants outside class, even over Thanksgiving, to support their wellness journey. Arletta builds strong bonds with new participants, guiding them through gym routines and helping them acclimate. Her actions exemplify YMCA values, showing care and respect in all she does. Arletta’s presence adds leadership, humor, and support, creating an uplifting environment in Livestrong. Her positive influence and commitment to others’ well-being make a profound impact on the YMCA community, fostering resilience and camaraderie among participants.
