Doug Markel, Club Director

Doug Markel is the West Shore YMCA Branch Youth & Sports Director. Prior to the WSY, Doug was the Youth, Family & Sports Director at the YMCA of the Roses, which included being the YMCA of the Roses Girls Volleyball Club Director for 15 years.

Corrine Silvio, Assistant Club Director

Corrine is the new Co-Assistant Club Director with the West Shore YMCA program and is entering her fifth season as a head coach. She coaches alongside her mom, Jill, switching between the 13U and 14U teams. She is also one of the program’s private lesson instructors.

Corrine brings different experiences from across different levels and age groups. She was a JV coach with the Palmyra Area High School Girls’ program for the 2023 & 2024 seasons where the JV team’s records were 12-5 and 13-1 respectively, with two second place finishes in high-level tournaments. She is moving to the collegiate level by serving as an assistant coach with the HACC Women’s Volleyball program starting in the 2025 season.

Prior to becoming a coach, she played in the Red Land Volleyball program for six years. Corrine is also one of our West Shore volleyball alumni, playing in the program for four years. For both programs, she competed as an outside hitter and a defensive specialist. She continues to play in indoor and outdoor leagues and tournaments with her sister. She holds a bachelor of science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg and currently works for a preclinical oncology CRO. When she is not at volleyball or in the lab, Corrine enjoys spoiling her two cats, Reese and Gimli.

Tom Frye, Assistant Club Director

Coach Tom is one of our longest-tenured coaches for the West Shore YMCA totaling 19 years. For the last six years, Tom has also served in the capacity of Co-Assistant Club Director. Prior to coming to the West Shore YMCA, Tom spent two years at Sport City Club and a year at Yorktowne. He spent five years coaching at Red Land High School before moving on to HACC for the last nine years, where he serves as the Head Coach. While building this program, Tom has created a competitive atmosphere leading the team to four national tournaments. He coached 19 girls that were placed on the EPAC and All-Region Teams. As well as having six girls on the Region All-Tournament Team (three being tournament MVPs), two NJCAA All-Americans and one player on the National All-Tournament Team. In addition to team accolades, Tom has received his own personal accolades; he has been named EPAC Coach of the Year five times as well as Region Coach of the Year four times. Tom resides with his wife in York while taking time to spoil their dog and his grandbabies.

Debbie Rutter, Club Positional Technician & Skill Development

13U and 15U Head Coach

Coach Debbie comes with a vast amount of experience and years of service. Being our longest-tenured coach, Debbie began teaching lessons at the West Shore YMCA in 2000. She has also acted as Head Coach for our younger teams. She currently runs our positional trainings and tryouts, and helps with skills development throughout the club. Her coaching resume comes with 17 years as the Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach and the Co-Director of Summer Volleyball Camps for Messiah University. Currently, Debbie is the Head JV Coach for Northern High School and Middle School programs. Debbie played for Messiah University for four years and graduated with a Marketing degree. Debbie currently resides in Dillsburg with her husband and spends her free time going on biking trips.

Valerie Heisey (Mimi), 13U Blue Head Coach

For Coach Mimi, volleyball has always been a part of her life. Mimi competed as an all-around player but specialized as a middle hitter at Messiah University. After graduation, she continued to compete in multiple co-ed and recreational leagues across New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. You can still find Coach Mimi playing recreational volleyball today. When it comes to coaching experience, Mimi brings a vast range of experience to our team. She has taught developmental, coached all levels of club, managed the Frogtown Volleyball Club in Ohio as well as running the middle school program for Timberstone Junior High in Ohio. Coach Mimi has been a part of our program for the past seven years. During that time, she has coached 13 and 14 Blue as well as supported running our Developmental Program. She is currently the JV Girls’ Volleyball Coach at Northern York Middle School.

Jill Silvio, 14U Blue Assistant Coach

Jill Silvio is going into her 5th season as an assistant coach for the YMCA. She grew up playing volleyball as a setter for Plum Borough School District in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1992, her team placed 2nd in the state. All three of her children played volleyball and 2 of them still play today, including her daughter, Coach Corrine.

Kelly Bastian, 14U Black Assistant Coach

Kelly has been playing volleyball for the past 10 years. She played at Lower Dauphin and is currently attending HACC as a Nursing student while playing and being a captain on the college team. Her team won the district and region last year, qualifying for the NJCAA National Volleyball Championship in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Peyton Maass, 14U Black Assistant Coach

Peyton comes with much experience as a varsity player at Central Dauphin, the West Shore YMCA Volleyball Club, and as a co-captain on the HACC college team. Peyton also has assisted in leading others through the Central Dauphin High School’s camp for middle school players. She will bring her school, club, and college experience to pass on to our 14/black participants!

Annie Kondas, 15U Black Head Coach

This is Annie Kondas’s first year coaching at the West Shore YMCA. She brings over a decade of coaching experience, including six seasons with Boiling Springs Middle School, five seasons as the Junior Varsity coach at Boiling Springs High School, and most recently, as the Head Varsity Coach, where she led the Bubblers to the district tournament.

Annie began her volleyball journey in northeast Ohio as a defensive specialist for Poland Seminary High School and the North East Ohio Volleyball Club. Her deep understanding of the game—especially from the back row—continues to influence her coaching approach today.

Annie earned her bachelor’s degree from American University and a master’s degree in education from Bowling Green State University. She currently serves as the Executive Director of Career Development at Dickinson College, where she helps students explore career pathways through internships, mentoring, and professional development.

Anna Crisci, 15U Blue Assistant Coach

This will be Anna’s second year coaching at the West Shore YMCA. Anna is a proud alum of the Y program and Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School’s Girls’ Volleyball Team. After participating in volleyball at Kutztown University as a hitter, Anna spent time in southern Maryland where she coached for a 16S Club Team and created a volleyball program for both boys and girls at the middle school level. This past year, she volunteered her time working with Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School’s Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. In the spring, she took on the role as the 7th Grade Head Coach for Mechanicsburg Middle School. In addition to volleyball, Anna coached Mechanicsburg’s 9th Grade Team and Mid-Penn Motion 8th Grade National Team this past winter and spring. When not coaching, Anna teaches 9th and 10th graders at MASH. In her 11 years of teaching, she has taught at both middle and high school levels.

Kimi Michael, 16U Black Head Coach

This year will be Coach Kimi’s third year with West Shore YMCA. Along with coaching at the Y, she also coaches at Boiling Springs for their high school and middle school program. Kimi is currently in school to become a Special Education Teacher and lives outside of Gettysburg with her husband and two teenage daughters. 

Kelly Jones, 16U Black Assistant Coach

This is coach Kelly’s first year coaching with the YMCA. She has been a volunteer coach for one season with Boiling Springs Middle School program and an assistant coach for the High School team. Her volleyball experience started at Lewistown High School where she played as an outside hitter for four years. Coach Kelly played multiple years of recreational volleyball in various indoor and outdoor leagues in Carlisle and Harrisburg. 

Coach Kelly has a degree in Health, Physical Education & Sports Medicine from Messiah College. Kelly began her career as an athletic trainer at a summer sports camp while also teaching at the middle and high school levels. She then stayed home to raise her three children and currently has been substituting for over 9 years in various local school districts. Kelly looks forward to help coach the U16 team this upcoming season.

Ryan Wood, 17U Black Head Coach

Coach Ryan is entering his fourth season with the West Shore YMCA, but that doesn’t mean he is lacking in experience. In 1996 and 1997, Ryan competed on the Hempfield High School State Championship teams. The following two years, he was team captain. During his tenure as an athlete, he helped lead his team to three District 3 titles, three League titles, and was selected for the first team All-State in 1998 and 1999. Coach Ryan was also named to the PIAA State MVP and National “Fab 50” his senior year.

After finishing his athletic career, he took his knowledge to the coaching side of the sport. From 2007-2012, he served as the JV Head Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach. In 2007, they brought home the State Championship. During this time, the program also picked up multiple District and League titles. Coach Ryan also started a club program where he coached for 11 seasons. His team won the capital classic and finished 5th at the Nittany Lion Invitational. Both victories qualified the team for national tournament bids. Coach Ryan lives in East Berlin with his wife Amanda and daughter Lexa, who plays for the West Shore YMCA program.

Keith Hartman, 17U Blue Head Coach

Keith is entering his third year coaching at the Y. He also serves as the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Penn State York, a position he has held since 2019. Under Keith and his wife Val, the Penn State York women’s volleyball program has achieved remarkable milestones, including the prestigious titles of “East Player of the Year” in 2021 and 2022, as well as “Defensive Specialist of the Year” in 2023. Additionally, Keith has been honored with the “PSUAC Coach of the Year” award in 2021, 2022, and 2023. The program has  also been recognized as PSUAC East Division Champions for three consecutive years (2021, 2022, and 2023) and achieved Runners-Up status at both the PSUAC  Championship (2022 and 2023) and the USCAA National Championship (2022  Runner-Up, 2023 3rd place finish). Keith is a coach who prioritizes academics, enabling his players to thrive both on the court and in their studies. Under his leadership at Penn State York, his student-athletes have consistently maintained an average GPA of 3.0 or higher, receiving academic achievement awards in the PSUAC & USCAA. In the academic year 2024-2025, the student-athletes he coached achieved an impressive GPA of 3.75, outpacing all other athletic programs at Penn State York.

Keith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Penn State Harrisburg and an Associate degree in Business Administration from Penn State Mont Alto. He was an accomplished student-athlete at Penn State Mont Alto, playing soccer from 1992 to 1994, and at Penn State Harrisburg, where he played club volleyball from 1995 to 1997 and served as team captain. Furthermore, Keith has extensive coaching experience, having served as the Head Boys Volleyball Coach at Dover High School for five seasons (2015-2019) and as a Head Girls Club Coach at NOVA for nine seasons (2015-2023).

Val Hartman, 17U Blue Assistant Coach

Val is entering her third year as a coach at the YMCA and has held the position of Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach at Penn State York since 2019. She shares in the numerous achievements attained with her husband, Keith Hartman, during their tenure at Penn State York. Additionally, Val has dedicated six seasons (2018-2023) as a Head Girls Club Coach at NOVA.

Her volleyball experience includes four years of Club Volleyball in high school, where she qualified for the National Championships in San Jose, CA. Following this, she continued her collegiate career at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, VA. Throughout the years, Val has actively participated in various indoor and outdoor leagues, including sixes, doubles, and quads.

Bob Martin, 18U Blue Head Coach

Coach Bob is part of the founding members of our program. In addition to coaching volleyball for the West Shore YMCA, he has coached at other programs including Prevail, LAVA (Lancaster Area Volleyball Association), Orlando Volleyball Academy, Orange County Juniors, and Sunshine Volleyball Club. Coach Bob has 29 years of experience coaching girls’ volleyball and four years of boys’ volleyball. He has been awarded the Sentinel’s Coach of the Year and the Volleyball Officials “Team Sportsmanship” Award. Rounding out the list of his incredible accomplishments, Coach Bob was the co-author on the book “Sideouts and Psych-Outs – Sport Psychology Skills for Maximum Volleyball.” Bob is the new Head Coach at Boiling Springs this season. This will be his 36th season coaching volleyball at one level or another, between high school, high school beach, middle school, club 12U-18U, and Keystone State games.
