Aqua Yoga Classes

The Harrisburg Area YMCA offers Aqua Yoga classes in a group fitness environment! Aqua Yoga is a gentle water exercise class. It uses the basic exercises, principles, and movements of yoga and adapts them to a shallow-water environment.

The program is a gentle and very low impact aquatic activity. With the release of gravity, the body is able to find the best stretch that mat yoga may restrict.  The stretches performed in the water allow the body to decrease discomfort, relieve stress, and improve flexibility. Participants are able to experience familiar poses in a new way and practice new movements in the water that they may not otherwise achieve on land.

By using the rhythm of the breath, the participant can achieve an inner sense of relaxation. Aqua Yoga uses relaxation poses for warm-up and cool-down phases of the class. Flotation devices are sometimes used in order to aid in a variety of exercises. Aqua Yoga classes help create fluid movements in your spine and take all weight off of your joints.

This class is open to adults of all ages and abilities. We specifically recommend it to those who are pregnant or senior citizens, as the low-impact exercises help strengthen the body effortlessly.
