My Story: Rebecca Funk

My Story: Rebecca Funk

This is a getting healthy success story from Rebecca Funk.  Rebecca uses the TE Connectivity Fitness Center, managed by the East Shore YMCA

I tell people that going to the gym has changed my life, and it can change theirs too. You don’t know what you are capable of until you try.

The staff at the TE Fitness Center cannot be beat,  Everyone has their own style and adds something different to their workouts ensuring that you have a total experience.   Some are a bit crazy and intense, others more subdued and calm, but they are all the friendliest most accepting people you will know.  Add to that, their knowledge and willingness to help and you have the perfect storm of fitness staff.  All you need to do to get the best work out you can and meet your goals is show up and try.  The staff will provide the motivation, support, knowledge and fun.

I was in the best shape of my life about 15 years ago when I had dreams of joining the Navy to fly jets.  I walked into the recruiter’s office and he asked what I thought about transport because I couldn’t fly jets with glasses.  I moved on. I attended college. But slowly,as other priorities took hold, my health took a back seat..  Over the years, I  put on 60 pounds.  When the holidays came around in 2013 I realized I needed to make a change. I would have to buy new clothes . . again.  I wasn’t happy with my self-image. I knew I could be in better shape.  I knew that at my age I should have more energy and more drive.

I started by going to the fitness center every day and putting 20 minutes in on the arc trainer. The weight was slowly melting, but I wasn’t seeing the results I wanted.  So, I upped the ante and began to attend fitness classes. I was surprised how quickly the weight started coming off when I started the classes.   I was toning up as well, which was my true aim..  My goal is to be fit, not skinny.  Eventually, I was attending four classes per week, but I was hesitant to take on the boxing class.  A friend at work provided the extra nudge,  and it is now one of my favorite classes.  I now do all the classes during my lunch hour and I feel like the combination of classes is a perfect blend to give me a total body workout.

Going to my first fitness class was a bit daunting.  I  worried that everyone would be better and  will think that I just can’t cut it.  However, I can tell you that is not the case.  The staff will work with you to ensure you are getting the best possible workout that you can.  They will stop and explain anything that you need help with and modify exercises to fit your fitness level.  Everyone in class has been supportive as well.

The most important thing that I have taken from this experience is the sense of overall health and well- being.  I feel like I am ten years younger. I don’t get winded while playing outside with my kids. I have energy when I get home and on the weekends.  Oh, and yes, I’m down 40 pounds and four clothing sizes.
