Making Healthy Changes

William Moore is a 59 year-old member of the Northern Dauphin County YMCA who resides in Dauphin, PA. William initially came to the Northern Dauphin County Branch YMCA due to an injury.  He was referred to the Y through his insurance company in order to keep working until he can return to work. William was assigned  office work for 12 hours a week and during this time, He believes that the YMCA changed his life.

His first impression of the Y was that it is just a fitness club and he felt that he would never fit in with the people.  On his second day of work, his impression of the YMCA changed dramatically.  William explained “I didn’t realize how much more the Y has to offer.”  William was a daily smoker and he inquired about the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking cessation program that is offered at the branch.  He enrolled in the program and to date is 2 months tobacco-free.  William also is involved with the Active Older Adults Program and participates in their social activities and helps to make them a success.

When asked  “What does the Y means to you?” William replied, “I didn’t realize how many people care about children and just people in general. The Y is a fantastic organization and I believe that it is the best organization in the country. The 2 best things that I have ever done in my life are first, coming here to the Y and second, quitting smoking.” William is still currently working at the Northern Dauphin County YMCA but will soon be undergoing surgery in hopes to return to his regular job. William is looking forward to returning to the YMCA after his recovery as he works towards returning to his career as a truck driver.
