Our Historical Facility
Originally built to accommodate a membership of 500, the Central Branch, our historical Harrisburg Y on Front Street, was in 1929 handling a number three times greater. The Executive Board determined it was time to build a new facility. The campaign for the new building began at about the same time as the Great Depression.
The current East Shore Y facility was completed in 1933. The original structure was designed in the Italian Romanesque style, which provided the template for many YMCA buildings from the late 19th century through the mid 1930’s. Traditional association thinking at the time was that a YMCA facility’s appearance should convey the organization’s intended image and mission. The YMCA of Harrisburg Central Branch building represents the end of an era in that it was one of the last grand YMCA structures of its type to be built.
Additions have been designed to provide a balance between new functionality and historic form. When touring the building, there is ample evidence of the Y’s success in maintaining its architectural legacy while providing members with state of the art equipment and contemporary amenities. Since it’s founding, the YMCA has sought to provide quality social, health, spiritual, and child care services to the community of downtown Harrisburg.
