Enhance®Fitness

Enhance®Fitness has been nationally recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, US Department of Health and Human Services, US Department on Aging, and the National Council on Aging. It is a proven community-based senior fitness and arthritis management program that helps older adults become more active, energized, and empowered for independent living.

Arthritis is a condition of painful joint stiffness and inflammation affecting 5 million Americans, including about half of all adults over age 65 and a third to one half of individuals living with chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Low-intensity physical activity performed on a regular basis has been shown to reduce pain, improve functioning, elevate mood, and delay the onset of disability for individuals with arthritis, but almost half of adults with this chronic condition report being physically inactive.

The YMCA is harnessing its strengths in fitness instruction and relationship-building to address this widespread health issue. Enhance®Fitness is a physical activity program comprised of three 60-minute classes per week. The classes are designed to safely increase participants’ fitness levels through aerobic and strength training exercises while building a sense of community and social connections among class members.

Studies show a 90% participant retention rate, 13% improvement in social functioning, 35% improvement in physical functioning, and 53% improvement in depression

Fewer hospitalizations and $945 less in health care costs per year than non-participants. In addition to the well-documented physical benefits of Enhance®Fitness, both research studies and participating YMCAs have reported that building social relationships and a sense of community among class participants is one of the best things about an Enhance®Fitness class!
