Lifeguard and Water Safety Classes

Water safety is a high priority for the Y. Throughout the year, the Y offers American Red Cross lifeguard water safety training courses in order to teach individuals how to keep members of their YMCA community safe in our indoor pools. We offer lifeguard certification and re-certification as well as instructor courses for anyone interested in pursuing a lifeguard certification.

CPR Certification

West Shore YMCA

The West Shore YMCA offers CPR classes to the community in order to teach our members the importance of CPR and how we can be heroes in responding to those who need our help. Through these classes, members will learn Adult CPR as well as how to use a defibrillator through the American Heart Association.

East Shore YMCA

The East Shore YMCA offers current American Red Cross Lifeguard Water Safety courses that includes CPR, AED and First Aid training and is valid for 2 years upon successful completion. Further certifications such as Waterfront Life-guarding, Aquatic Attraction Life-guarding, and Oxygen Administration are also offered.

Lifeguard Certification

West Shore YMCA

This lifeguard water safety certification course is taught through a method called blended learning. Blended learning combines online learning with on-site skills sessions where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Lifeguard candidates must register in advance for the swim test and On-Site Skills Sessions prior to receiving the link for the online learning portion.

The online learning portion is an additional fee of $35 paid directly to the ARC. All candidates must register and complete the online portion prior to the first scheduled On-Site Skills Session. To complete the online lessons you will need access to a computer and the internet. When registering for this course, be sure to provide an email address, which in turn we will send instructions to you on how to complete the online lessons. All students must pass the required pre-test in order to continue.

The Swim Test consists of a 300-yard swim continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing, reading water for 2 minutes using legs only and completing a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds (retrieving the swimming brick).

All On-Site Skill Sessions must be attended. There are NO make up classes.

If a candidate does not pass the required Swim Test a refund will be given minus a $25 processing fee. No refunds will be given once the On-Site Skills Sessions have begun.

East Shore YMCA

The East Shore YMCA offers current American Red Cross Lifeguard Water Safety courses for individuals 15 and Older. This American Red Cross Lifeguarding course includes CPR, AED and First Aid training and is valid for 2 years upon successful completion. Further certifications such as Waterfront Lifeguarding, Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding, and Oxygen Administration are also offered.

We also offer American Red Cross Blended Learning courses to cut the amount of “in-class” time in half. Please call the East Shore YMCA front desk for more information on upcoming courses!

Lifeguard Instructor Course

This course is available at our West Shore YMCA Branch. To be eligible for the instructor course candidates must:

  • Be at least 17 years of age on or before the last day of class
  • Have a current CPR/AED, first-aid and lifeguarding certification or equivalent certification from another organization
  • Provide own participant manual

Upon conclusion of the instructor course, instructor candidates will:

  • be able to perform applicable in-water rescue, first-aid, CPR and AED skills
  • be able to conduct courses in a manner that helps participants stay engaged in the learning process
  • be able to exhibit the characteristics required of a Red Cross representative and role model

Lifeguard Recertification

This course is available at our West Shore YMCA Branch. The Lifeguard Recertification course provides individuals with all the training and information that they will need to be re-certified as a lifeguard.

Blended learning review course combines online learning with on-site skill session where you will practices skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to complete the initial online lessons of your training at least two days prior to your on-site skill session.

Deep Link will be provided once facility fee is paid. Please provide your email address at the time of registration for course. Proof of current ARC Life-guarding certificate required. Participants with an expired certification must get instructor approval prior to registering.
