Healthy Choices on Display

On April 7th, 2015 The Northern Dauphin County Branch YMCA met with the Business Women’s Association at Salem Lutheran Church in Elizabethville. Megan Maurer presented the Grocery Store Tour to the group. Aisle by aisle she virtually toured a grocery store with the association, identifying which items to choose and which to avoid.

Everything from produce, to chips and bread, to snack crackers, they covered it! Megan even discussed how marketing comes in to play in the grocery store. For instance, cartoon character cereals are almost always displayed at the eye level of children, and companies can market their products as having “zero trans-fat” even if that isn’t always the case.

Lastly, she touched on how to read and understand food labels. You can’t rely on the marketing of the package to tell you the truth about what you’re putting into your body. Therefore, at the end of the presentation, she hoped that the ladies learned a few smarter ways to grocery shop and were ready to take back their health!
