Together, we are working for a greater purpose.
Did you know that the YMCA movement invented both basketball and volleyball? The Y, in its rich 170 year history, has offered society many firsts, including these two very important sports. But these examples are just a small part of what our organization represents.
It’s true that people know us for our expertise in health and fitness, pioneering this industry over 100 years ago. We are proud of the rich history and impact that the YMCA has had on communities all across the country. While we celebrate this robust and proud legacy of providing access to healthy living, we know that many may not fully understand the core of our mission. It is to address the changing needs of our community and serve all people, regardless of background, financial status, ethnicity, or creed.
We exist to support the educational goals of youth and teens and to connect working parents with childcare solutions, while lessening the burden of the government. Programs like Before and After School Care, Teen Achievers, Kids In Motion, and Mentoring at the Y provide a safe and productive place for kids in our community to learn and grow. Summer Day Camps help kids stay active and engaged while not in school.
Youth sports create an environment where sportsmanship is more important than winning. Swimming lessons develop confidence and life-saving skills. Classes and camaraderie build community support for a healthy lifestyle. All of these things are what make us great, and we can only deliver on them together.
This year, we want to focus on what we are doing together with support from you, our sponsors and partners. Nothing is possible without your consistent support, and we could not be more grateful for your confidence in us. Thank you for allowing us to share just a few highlights from our year in our Annual Report. We hope that you will enjoy this look back at the people and programs that have benefited from the Harrisburg Area YMCA in 2016.
